چکیده
We present the result of astrometric observations of the radio pulsar PSR B0656+14, made using the Very Long Baseline Array. The parallax of the pulsar is π = 3.47± 0.36 mas, yielding a distance 288 −27 pc. This independent distance estimate has been used to constrain existing models of thermal x-ray emission from the neutron star’s photosphere. Simple blackbody fits to the x-ray data formally yield a neutron star radius R∞ ∼ 7− 8.5 km. With more realistic fits to a magnetized hydrogen atmosphere, any radius between ∼ 13 and ∼ 20 km is allowed. Different mechanisms which may possibly explain existence of magnetic fields on astronomically large scales are described. A recently suggested model of magnetic fields generation slightly before hydrogen recombination is discussed in more detail.

We report on the XMM-Newton observations of the young, 102 ms pulsar PSR B1706-44. We have found that both a blackbody plus power-law and a magnetized atmospheric model plus power-law provide an excellent fit to the EPIC spectra. The two scenarios are therefore indistinguishable on a statistical basis, although we are inclined to prefer the latter on physical grounds. In this case, assuming a s...

Condensation in the outer regions of decaying supernovae is an efficient source of dust with grain size up to more than 1µm. The largest grains leave the parent galaxy, thus forming " grey " intergalactic dust, which can explain the observed dimming of light from distant supernovae without invoking cosmic acceleration.

We present a numerical study of the hydrodynamics in the final stages of inspiral in a black hole–neutron star binary, when the separation becomes comparable to the stellar radius. We use a Newtonian three–dimensional Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) code, and model the neutron star with a soft (Γ = 5/3) polytropic equation of state and the black hole as a Newtonian point mass which accretes...
